Starling Fledgling | Wet Specimen | 65mm Dome

Starling fledgling in dome with a black base suspended in 71% ethanol 29% glycerine. With the proper care this specimen should last you a lifetime.

Specimen are the same age, weight and size. Selected at random but all super cute and striking similar.

Fixation: All specimens are properly preserved using 10% NBF for a minimum of 21 days per 60g of each species. All specimens have been injected into each section of the body to make sure we get all the internal organs as well as the outside.

Specimens are removed from formalin by soaking in distilled water.

This specimen is suspended in a glycerine alcohol solution.

Wet specimens suspended in an alcohol-based solution benefit from having the solution changed every 6 months to 1 year as the alcohol content depletes over time.

Starling are an introduced & invasive species. Although a lot of people will cull them, these babies were not killed by humans.

We have several starlings nesting in our shed roof, and a lot were killed by currawongs. We observed the currawong pull the babies from the roof and drop them. Some died on impact, and others would hop along the ground, and the parents would continue to care for them from the ground.

It was interesting to observe the behaviour of the currawong and the parents feeding the fledgling from the ground. This behaviour of the parents is considered normal, and although starlings are an invasive and pest species, this is also the norm for other bird species. That is why sometimes, when observing a fledgling learning to fly, it doesn't actually need saving or human interference.
