Scaly Leg Mite Pathology Chicken Foot Display | Rhode Island Red Hen

Rhode Island Red Hen skeletal foot display to show scaly leg mite damage if left untreated.

This was an old hen and does have a spur. She has some scaly leg mite bone damage. No nail sheaths, just bone, as the nail sheath was badly damaged and hardly existent; you can see damage to the spur.

The scaly mite damage was the worst in this area; near the spur, dead scales had lifted and formed a cluster that was easily just picked off after death. This case was pretty extreme.

The leg is affixed to a resin-coated natural wooden mount. The 4th toe had some damage to the

trochlea, and the toe was no longer sitting straight but instead on an angle that directed the toe slightly inwards.

These hens came from multiple sources and are NOT from my own flock. A lot of hens were collected from dump sites across Tasmania, where the animals are unfortunately dumped. Just another reason the dumping of animals is cruel, among many more.
